David Sheppard: Batting for the Poor – book launch

David Sheppard

You are invited to a special event to launch the official biography of Bishop David Sheppard at The New Room/John Wesley’s Chapel, 36 The Horsefair, Bristol, BS1 3JE from 5.00pm-6.30pm on Thursday 5 December.

David Sheppard: Batting for the Poor

‘David Sheppard: Batting for the Poor – the authorized biography of the celebrated cricketer and bishop’, which has a foreword by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, is published in hardback by SPCK on 21 November 2019.

The author of the biography, Professor Andrew Bradstock, will be attending the book launch with contributions from two other special guests: Rachel Newton, a close friend of David and Grace Sheppard whose late husband, the Rev’d Dr John Newton, worked closely with Bishop David and Archbishop Derek Worlock in Liverpool; and the distinguished cricket historian Stephen Chalke.

This official biography tells Sheppard’s story in full for the first time. Drawing on the closed collection of papers left by Sheppard in Liverpool Central Library, archival material from other institutions and interviews with more than 250 individuals who knew and worked with Sheppard, this fascinating study offers many new insights into a life whose legacy is still felt today.

‘This book captures the charisma of Bishop David Sheppard, who inspired a generation of young people and lives on in the influence he still has today.’ Rt Hon Gordon Brown

‘An excellent biography, well researched, well written. This is fascinating not just for cricket-lovers but for everyone.’ Lord Griffiths of Fforestfach
