Emma Willis on working out

Our favourite presenter-turned-designer is back, with a new range that’s perfect for jumping into January.

Emma Willis has launched her debut sportswear collection with Next just in time for the new year (and new decade!). Its pieces work for just about every type of exercise – from swimwear to sports bras, shorts and leggings – in dynamic patterns with little bursts of bright colour to inspire movement.

Naturally the range has prompted Emma to think about her own exercise regime (which she used to help her design the versatile range). How does Emma Willis work out?

Emma’s approach to exercise

Exercise is about so much more than just physical fitness for Emma. The links between exercise and mental health are well-known, and there’s an added self-care bonus to be found in making time just for yourself in the gym.

“Finding time for yourself every week is so important…That time for me is when I train.”

Emma tries to keep her lifestyle healthy with a good diet too – especially in January after a few weeks of traditional Christmas indulgence. “I’ll do a sugar-free January,” she confirms, and will eat salads or soups for lunch alongside nutrient-rich dinners.

Boxing and reformer pilates: Emma’s favourites

Variety in her workouts is important for Emma, but boxing and reformer pilates are still her favourites. She’ll mix these up with body weight and weighted strength training, focusing not on how she looks but how she feels – exercise for Emma is about staying strong and healthy through the years.

“Keeping things different is important. When it gets repetitive then not only does my body get used to it but I get bored!”

She’ll aim for morning workouts rather than evening, and takes each week as it comes rather than putting herself under unnecessary pressure to be in the gym a set number of times. “It’s on a week-by-week basis…so I don’t get stressed out by not doing as much every week as I’d like to.”

Emma’s gym gear: every workout covered

The capsule range puts touches of bright pink and orange against a neutral charcoal background, in block colour pairings or in a patterned print. Light or more supportive sports bras come in two styles, to match with shorts, leggings and vests.

“It was really important to do sportswear that looked really good but was functional…and also didn’t cost the earth.”

In classic Emma fashion everything mixes and matches really well – including the cosy loungewear, for pre- and post-workouts (we LOVE the rust sweater).

Everything comes in a full range of sizes, from 6-22 (or XS-XXL for some items), in high-performing moisture wicking material with four way stretch technology – keeping up no matter what your workout is!
