Learnings, lingerie and autumn highlights with Emma Willis

Emma Willis

Emma Willis’s career as a fashion designer for Next is going from strength to strength. She’s just released her first Autumn/Winter collection, which for the first time includes several pieces of beautifully crafted lingerie – we delve into the range to uncover the best of it.

The latest collection sees both neutral and bold colours in soft, textured fabrics – a mixture of autumn/winter staples and colourful pieces to stand out. Matching comfort with style is fast becoming a hallmark of Emma’s work, with elegant tailoring designed to fit neatly without constricting to create elegant, feminine silhouettes.

There are gorgeous satin suits and a pleated shirt dress (below, £60) in stunning jewel tones, cosy nightwear in a starry night sky print, snuggly cable knit jumpers (above, £35) and paperbag-waisted trousers – all topped off with some rather chic full-length coats.

There really is something for everyone – inclusivity continues to be important for Emma, and of course every item is again available in sizes 6-22.

Lingerie with comfort and style

Emma is no stranger to the challenges involved in designing an entire fashion collection, but creating lingerie brought new trials. Designing “the pieces you’ve always wanted in your underwear drawer” was amazing, but shooting the photography for the lingerie was “absolutely terrifying!” Emma confides.

What helped was feeling truly comfortable in her creations – pieces that are genuinely great to wear while looking fabulous.

Lace bralette (£20) and lace high-waist knickers (£15)

The full hip or high-waisted briefs, soft-cupped bras (Emma doesn’t really wear underwired bras since having children) and sleek bodies are made in soft yet stylish fabrics – a midnight blue lace, or black fabric with a little hint of autumnal bronze.

The lingerie is also designed to work for the “underwear as outwear” trend. We love the black body, £26 – perfect for wearing under an open shirt instead of a camisole or t-shirt.

Tailored to perfection

In true Emma style, the whole AW19 collection is much more about truly wearable pieces than unrealistic fashion – but with a nod to current trends.

“I feel like with each collection I become more confident and familiar with the design process. It’s so important to me that the pieces in my collection are items that I would actually wear and would want to buy myself.”

These paperbag-waisted trousers (£46) are a perfect colour match to other items in Next’s range: so you could go for head-to-toe camel, or pair with a crisp white shirt.

The classic Emma tailored suit comes in a beautiful deep teal – whether you wear both pieces together or mix-and-match, it’s sure to turn heads.

Chic coats

Completing the AW19 range is a set of sleek coats, each of which work with almost every single item in the collection. They’re both warm and stylish – just what’s needed for the tricky transitional months.

Our personal favourite? This herringbone coat (£88). Instant style elevation for any outfit, especially if you’re sticking to monochrome colours.

And so to bed…

Emma is particularly excited about this season’s nightwear as she prepares for the colder months.

Navy star full-length pyjama set (£40)

“In the winter it’s all I want to be in…I just want to go home, when it’s dark at 5 o’clock and get some cosy pyjamas on!”

Short and full-length sets are created in a soft night-sky fabric, with choices of a matching or classic black bedroom robe – perfect for wrapping up at home as the nights draw in.
